HOW TO BE A MORNING PERSON

Have you ever snoozed your alarm so many times (or destroyed your alarm completely) that you missed an appointment? Not everyone is born equal when it comes to rising early. It seems to be a matter of genes (it really is not). However, this crucial event makes (or mars) our day. Here are some ideas to help you finally be able to get it right and wake up on time.



1. Just be prepared

Lighten up your morning workload by preparing everything you can the evening before. Pack your school or work bag, your sports bag or select your clothes. Think ahead of your upcoming appointments, engagements and consider transport times and variables like the possibility of a traffic jam or not. Finally, if you can, prepare some parts of your breakfast: mug on the table, bread purchased, … Any single little things will let you save precious minutes in the morning. Of course do not forgot to set your alarm!



2. Know how to manage your wake up

If you use an alarm, listen up!! Did you sleep well? it’s time to wake up!, your alarm is ringing … stop! Do not touch that snooze button! This little too many times used feature can ruin your sleep. So use it smart. Program your alarm 10 minutes earlier than you really need and snooze only once. This will warn your body that it will be time to wake up. Second ring will so be the right one.
For the night, put your alarm (which is most probably your phone) as far as you can from your bed. The needed effort to stop it will wake your body up and help you to begin the day. In the mean time, prefer your favorite music or radio station instead of the traditional annoying sounds. This will boost your motivation to stand up and energize your day (you may even want to get up and dance to the tune). Once you’re up, open your windows or turn on the light - it will help your body to know that a new day is coming.

3. A good sleep is the key for a good morning

Everyone has their own sleep pattern, so going to bed too early is not useful if you don’t feel tired. Just go when you are falling asleep! Even if you have only 4 hours of sleep, be positive by telling yourself « I will have a good night and tomorrow will be amazing ». Remember all the good things you have to do too; The psychological effect of this is real and you will have a wonderful wake up. Finally, prepare a good and healthy night’s sleep by avoiding the urge to check your electronic devices at least 40 minutes before to go to bed. Having a relaxing warm shower or a 10 minutes read would help to bring you to fall into Morpheus’ arms.

4. Energize your body and spirit

Shake your body from the very first minutes of your day. Cold is a good means of waking you up: refresh your face under cold water as you wake up. Once your senses are delicately awakened do some sport! Start by stretching your joints. Then do some real exercise. For the most courageous of us, go have a jog. For those who are in a hurry try the « 7 minutes workout » program - there are apps for that. Doing some exercise will energize your body, reduce stress and tensions. Do it 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast, it will help you to burn more fat than at any other moment of the day.

5. Have a morning routine

The most important key to succeed at being a morning person is to maintain a routine. Wake up every day at the same time. Yes, even on Sunday (this is not a joke). To break your rhythm would signal to your body that your routine is a fake. To do so, you can ask some help from your family or friends. For example agree to commute together or to have a brunch at a precise hour. Most of the time your house mates will do this job for you. If you live alone, agree to chat with someone you like when each of you wake up. Last advice: avoid any morning nap to accustom your body to your routine.

6. Have a good breakfast

You do not have to be a foodie to understand the power of a proper breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. So do not skip it! Eat a lot of proteins like eggs or yoghourts so as to avoid the mid-day peckish moment (peckish moments will make you fat). Have as much coffee as you want too, you will be more concentrated at work (or not, but you will be happy you had as much coffee as you wanted).
