Let's discuss.... IS "BEING CONTENTED" A VIRTUE?

What do you get when you combine a change of location involving hundreds of road miles with terrible power supply in the face of even higher fuel prices and less availability and a situation where network providers choose to be on the best of their worst behaviors? This kind of absence.

It has been an eventful two days, and sincere apologise for being away for that long; with that said, we’ll delve into the issue up for debate today. On a personal level, I have always wondered if contentment is a good or bad thing, my head has about a thousand arguments in support of each side of the divide, but here are two scenarios to help shape your voice.

We all agree that religion has a huge part to play in our lives, especially in this part of the world. Major ones among these religions preach contentment (they even admonish us to share the little we have at our disposal). It is believed that lack of contentment is the beginning of many of the vices that occur every day: robberies, diversion of funds, murder and so on. Many are of the opinion that being contented with what we own will help us to avoid falling into the snare of unhealthy ambition.

On the other hand, there is a problem
which I have encountered with people in the remote villages and rural areas where I have travelled; and it bothers on their contentment with the state of their lives. These people are satisfied with living out the monotonous routines of their lives and the do not see the possibility of a more grand scheme of things. Just the thoughts of trudging along to a certain age range, get married (optionally) and start spawning.

Worse still is the inability if the younger generations in those areas to dream of anything big enough to impact their communities, let alone the world.

I remember watching a documentary on the life of the Nomads of Northern Nigeria few years ago, and a kid in a primary school was asked what he dreamt to be in life. His answer was to herd cows – just like his father – he was contented with reaching only where his father has been, no more than that.

There are more arguments existing where these came from, but lend your voice. When does contentment become a bad thing?

  1. Living a life of contentment without aspiration is like a dead living because those who do not aspire may not go far in life. Therefore discontentment can spur people to aspire that is not.sin or a bad value. However when your discontentment is attached to greed; avarice, envy of other people's wealth, inordimate ambition for wealth without effort, these can lead you to commit sin and crimes against other members of the society.

  2. People's level of exposure also determine their level of aspiration. Define yours and work towards your dreams obeying God along the way. Nothing should push you to set aside God in your discontentment and struggle for a better future. Remember life here on earth is temporary, it does not worth allowing any ambition to truncate your eternal heavenly goal. Be guided.

    1. No human being is ever contented because if you stay stagnant other issues may overwhelm you but when you make it or whencomfortable in life, be contented only when your life has positive impact on others.
